Nakajima B5N2 Navy Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber Model 12 KATE

Figure 1
A Nakajima B5N2 Navy Type 97 Carrier Attack Bomber Model 12 (KATE) carrying a 800kg torpedo operating off a wet airfield. The KATE formed the mainstay of the Japanese carrier aerial torpedo delivery platform in the early part of WWII. The KATE was versatile, and the one crashed on Dai Island, North of Malaita had just dropped a half dozen 60kg bombs on the American positions at Lunga Point. Compared to other Japanese aircraft, there are very few KATE archaeological sites accessible in the Solomons. [As published p. 63 Famous Airplanes of the World No. 32, January 1992]
