The only ground combat operation on Savo Island was a strong patrol by two companies of the 1st Marine Raider Battalion on September 4, 1942. The tough Raiders landed at Panueli on the North end of Savo at 0800 hours. Turned out there was no Japanese on the island at that moment, so there was no combat on Savo.
