Curtiss SOC Seagull

Figure 1
A Curtiss SOC-1 Seagull, Side No. 1, of VCS Detachment Ringbolt flies over Florida Island in the Solomons near the Squadron’s base in late 1942 or early 1943. Lt. Joseph J.J. Dobler of the squadron was shot down over Malaita in his SOC-1, BuNo. 9962, on January 30, 1943. The archaeological site of Dobler’s plane is a rare one as there are few losses of this aircraft type in the Solomons, but along with Polk’s loss (Site MALA17) of a month and a half earlier, Malaita has two of these uncommon aircraft sites.
