mission launch Arosi

Figure 1
Collateral damage on Dog Day (August 7, 1942) of the 1st Marine Division landings on Guadalcanal and Tulagi Areas was the South Sea Evangelical Mission launch Arosi. The $15,000 mission launch was bombed by American planes on the coast of Malaita and sent to the bottom of the sea. The incident seems suspiciously similar to a claim by U.S. Navy Torpedo Squadron EIGHT (VT-8) on the  SAME day, in the SAME area, and approximately the SAME size of vessel – see SiteMALA31. The Arosi would have looked very similar to the Melanesian Mission launch depicted above in the Solomons. It had been a rough couple of days for the South Sea Evangelical Mission on Malaita, all at the hands of friendly forces!. [As published, opposite p. 65, “Kakamora” by Dr. Charles E. Fox, Hodder & Stoughton, 1962].
