The only wartime Japanese installation on Malaita was a lookout post equip with radio at Afufu on Cape Astrolabe. The U.S. Marines wiped out the Japanese station on November 4, 1942, in a very one-sided fire fight. It is Malaita’s only battlefield and therefore a very significant WWII archaeological site.
